GTA 6 fans impatient for news are going too far with misdirected anger
GTA 6 is nearly here—at least when considering the time we've all spent waiting for it—but that's apparently not enough, and fans have once again taken it too far by harassing people who don't even have anything to do with the game's development. Famous video game developer interviewer Reece “Kiwi Talkz” Reilly has just taken to Twitter with an alarming request. In a shockingly long post, he asks people to stop spamming him about GTA 6, before describing the abuse fans are also subjecting his wife to, a person who not only has no connection to GTA, but is also recovering from a serious surgery.https://twitter.com/kiwitalkz/status/2053941108376469926?s=20 Spamming a person who's in poor health isn't smart Internet sleuthing; it's just criminally irresponsible. And that's not even the only instance of GTA 6 fan abuse from the past few days. A few days ago, Game Informer teased their new issue, which would feature a game with a four-word name on its cover. This was obviously an attempt to get people to speculate on what not-yet-well-known game it would be — not to go crazy about GTA 6, because GTA 6 wouldn't need that kind of teasing. I'm guessing Game Informer is rather well-informed about how rabid people are about GTA. Today we learned that the cover features Blood of the Dawnwalker, a vampire-themed RPG by some of the people behind Witcher 3.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=at8KTjb7Q_Q It actually looks pretty neat, but GTA fans decided to feel betrayed because they'd previously decided this had to be about GTA, and the comments section became a cesspool of vague and not-so-vague threats that really don't do anyone in the community any favors. Recently, I caught a lot of flak for claiming that the "vitriol" in games discourse of the '00s was so much better, but I can't seem to find anything to prove me wrong on that these days. We're getting to a point where it becomes difficult to defend games where we indulge in great acts of evil to claim that they don't actually inspire or embolden those of us who don't care about others in real life. GTA is a great series because it provides an excellent power fantasy, not because it should inform the way you live your life. Come on, let's not give weirdo anti-violence in games crusaders like Jack Thompson a reason to feel vindicated. GTA 6 is set to release for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S on November 19 of this year. That's not very far away. If you really need to get all updates as soon as they come out, then be cool and check out the awesome resources we tailored for just that.
