id Software unveils Doom: The Dark Ages — Revelations DLC for July 7
One of my favorite games last year was Doom: The Dark Ages from id Software. And as id celebrates its 35th year, it’s great to see the arrival of Doom: The Dark Ages — Revelations DLC coming soon. Joshua Boyle, senior community lead at id Software, said in a press event the DLC arrives on July 7 with 10 hours to 12 hours of gameplay. It has six levels and its length is comparable to the two previous DLCs combined. This time, you play as the Doom Slayer, everybody’s favorite killing machine. While the last game focused on a mix of melee combat and shooting, this game adds the new dimension of spear combat. Hugo Martin, id Software studio co-director and game director, said that Doom: The Dark Ages and its DLC are a “power fantasy like no other.” The Doom Slayer looks like Conan The Barbarian. Source: id Software He added, “It plays like the culmination of 35 years of Doom” where you get to “shoot cool guns in cool spaces against awesome bad guys.” You juggle three different weapons: your shield, your chain spear and one of a variety of guns. The DLC includes new enemies, upgraded AI, and a Metroidvania-style hub with puzzles and hidden corridors. The end game content offers unique challenges, classic levels, and the Ripatorium for endless arena mode. The spear is the new weapon in Doom: The Dark Ages — Revelations DLC. Source: id Software Marty Stratton, executive producer, said the DLC features a new spear weapon with abilities like throw, stab, and meat hook, each countering specific AI types. It includes master key system for unlocking additional content. The soundtrack by Finishing Move focuses on bringing the cinematic quality of the game to the fore. You have to dual wield weapons in each hand with an additional melee option. To deal with the hardest bosses and battles, you’ll need to get comfortable with all three ways of killing demons, Martin said. You can stack damage using various preferences like flail, skull crusher, rail spike and more. You’re back to hell in Doom: The Dark Ages — Revelations DLC. Source: id Software The shield is back from Doom: The Dark Ages and the chain spear adds a new twist. You can switch quickly between the spear and the shield, and you can hit some high-skill metas the more you learn. By the end game, spear play will be required. You can dash with the spear or use the grappling hook. “You’ll feel like a monster truck with a jet engine strapped to your back,” Martin said.“You can Stab with it, slam down on demons like the hammer from Eternals DLC, throw it like a sniper shot.” Martin said there are a lot of opportunities for “player expression.” There are tough DLC demons like the Pain Elemental, Specter Whiplash, Purple Hell Knights, Zombies and a new wizard. Martin’s advice is “You got to kill them fast.” The Doom Slayer’s fall from grace. Source: id Software The campaign is divided into two parts: base game and end game. You can see your objectives and get through about 60% of the experience in the base game. In the end game, you have to master level difficulty that you will unlock once you complete the base game. You will be able to unlock playable spaces from classic Doom games. And you can go into endless combat in the Ripatorium. In terms of the story, the Slayer gets tossed into hell and falls from grace. He then has to fight his way out of hell and find the path to ascension. You can stop and read the lore along the way, or just skip it and fight.
