During the transition to the Gregorian calendar in the Meiji era, this date was aligned with February 11th and made into a holiday. Japan widely celebrated the 2,600th anniversary of the founding of the empire in 1940. After World War II, the celebrations were discontinued, but in the mid-1960s they were resumed with refined wording, eliminating any mention of the empire.
