‘Pay or leak’: Hackers breach Rockstar Games and demand ransom with a graphic straight from Cyberpunk 2077
Rockstar Games has once again come under attack from hackers who now claim that they've breached the company's security. ShinyHunters, as the group is named, is supposedly holding Rockstar's information for ransom and intends to leak it to the public if it is not paid. As per Cyber Security Guru, Rockstar Games was hacked after ShinyHunters exploited a vulnerability in Anodot, an AI analytics tool used by various companies, including Rockstar, to maximize cloud hosting efficiency by tracking real-time costs and spending. According to that site, Anodot operates deep within a company's security system, which seems to have allowed ShinyHunters to pierce into Rockstar Games' Snowflake data warehouse. By exploiting a vulnerability in Anodot, the hackers seemingly gained "authentication tokens," allowing them to simply walk into Snowflake and extract a ton of data before the company's security caught wind of the situation. Seeing as they accessed the warehouse using legitimate tokens, Rockstar likely had no idea anyone was doing anything nefarious until it was too late. This group, as Cyber Security Guru explains, has been around for years and successfully breached Microsoft, Wattpad, and AT&T, to name a few of their victims. The group allegedly gave Rockstar an ultimatum: pay the ransom or have your data leaked, with the following picture supposedly sent to the company. The font, the style, and the editing in the message above are all ripped straight out of Cyberpunk 2077, as this is how most messages appear to you in the game. Though they're supposed to be professionals, using stuff like this seems, at the very least, childish, though I'm not clued into the inner workings of hacker groups to know how their minds work. Rockstar Games has confirmed to Cyber Security Guru that a breach had indeed taken place, though users won't feel any of it. "This incident has no impact on our organization or our players," the company said. This isn't the first time Rockstar Games has had to deal with hackers and potential leakers. Huge development footage of GTA 6 leaked on several occasions a few years back, and if the hackers above are to be believed, perhaps even more is yet to be revealed, even though the game is months away from release.
